MAGAZINEFabian pitted next door with his street roadster (GSR) and we dug the real headlights he hung on the thing: you have to run headlights to be a street roadster class runner so most guys put these little tractor lights or some kind of smallish spotlights on them to cheat wind drag. Not Fabe. Take a look.
Ron Jolliffe, the Hop Up Guy from Idaho (Rocket Science) told us on Saturday that he was here with his new '34-like racer to 'get a red hat'. Whoa, Daddy! Last we heard there was some kind of anal protest....no matter. The Rocket Science guy will come back next time with changes if that's what it takes.
Other Early Timers Tom and Karen Beggs were set up with their own hospitality suite at the big end so a cat could refresh on the way to and from the starting line; Hop Up Guys from Minnesota, Idaho and British Columbia (thanks, Keith for the secret doo-dads - wink! wink!), Paison got there with his brand new (200 miles) flattie roadster accompanied by Vic and his daughter in their roadster, Commander Stroupe, Knute (marketing manager of the Salt Cellar), Hotrod Joe in the ever-evolving tub, Bishop, Tardell and Mikey, their car, which got it's record, Old Pal Lorenzo was runnin' with them (he's the guy with the Viper record: wife went away for the weekend, he bought the first black Viper roadster with 'savings'. and 1 1/2 days and 74 miles later rolled it - right in the neighborhood - all before his Honey got back home! "Hi, Honey. Guess what happened while you were away?"
Kugel went 306 early but kinda broke parts and just set on 'spectator' for the rest of the week Duane McKinney ran the all-wheel roadster, Frank Mac (thanks for dinner) ,Verne, Georgie, and there were Roundtable guys, and Hambers. We understand that Hugh Coltharp and Joe Mac got there the day after we left and..........the Smiths from The Hot Rod Works are now running a roadster with a good looking car, crew, support vehicles and pit.
Peter Vincent and Nathan were there doing business as usual and we'll look forward to their typical results.

Burkhardt, Vesco, Teague, all were said to have gone FAST but we don't know details at this writing.
Spectator population and entry number seem to have profited from the 50th celebration; guys what think about it, know that this barren, crunchy, pastel-hued land is the location of the earliest pagan throws of land speed racing and all-out hot rod hammerin'.
It's not done any better for a spectator than to drive his hot iron out there and back; you will be among with other believers - and sometimes a very few fraud rodders - and there's even an impromptu cruise night at one of the hotels. That hotel didn't want us and threatened tow trucks and like that, but we think we have an angle on some 'preferred' parking for next time. You CAN fly in to SLC rent a car and get there and that's OK. But you really should be in your rod or custom, adding to the ambiance of the illusion. Then on the way back you can visualize how difficult it might have been for the guys towing racers with wheezed-out flathead pickups and sedans up and down long grades in desert tempertures, with no cell phones, auto clubs or even frickin' civilization anywhere near, ya know?
Some of us are getting closer to committing to that flathead four 'class'. There is no class, but we figure we can run them, no threat to the overhead guys, have our own 'banquet' at the Bonneville Buffet, with a bumper sticker-sized banner "100 MPH Club" on the table, and programs written on bar napkins. Hell, the HOP UP CRAGAR will have to be called the HOP UP ACME with the new flathead motor!
Hop Up Style, Buddy.................... Hop Up STYLE.
Don Orosco figured it out. He acquiried the car from Hop Up Guy Tom Branch, borrowed the nose from Jim Fuller (to use as a pattern for another nose) and the attached shots show that the car is being restored in DBO fashion for the pleasure of Hop Up cats everywhere. Mac snapped these in-progress shots at the tin shop where things are 'shaping up'!
Soon the project will bounce back in to the able hands of Brad, Ole and Don, where it will be groomed for another run at the big prize at Pebble Beach, in 2003. (As you know, they won 2001 with the So-Cal coupe; Meyer/Pearson took second place, and McPherson/Christman-Duncan took third. Tough room.)
Deuce steel:Tired of the "wrong' Firewall for your '32 Ford? The right one is now available. Deuce Steel introduces peproduction steel firewalls that are exact copies of the originals and fit all stock '32 roadster, closed car, pickup truck and steel aftermarket bodies. these "original style" firewalls have no holes drilled in them, which allows for custom alterations and eliminates the need for welding over unused openings. Deuce Steel parts are EPD (electronic deposition paint) coated to eliminatge corrosion. None better available anywhere. Then we got word that custom stalwart Frank Livingston is reprising his '55 Oakland Roadster Show Chevy fastback, as well as another custom effort or two.
Just after WWII, hot rodding got a start when young men took their cars out to the dry lake beds to see what they would do.
They began a whole new industry right there on the dry mud.
"Running at the Lakes", a new bronze sculpture by Steve Posson, captures the spirit of the early lakes meets.
The car has Kelsey-Hayes wheels, a dropped axle and a race car steering wheel, but everything else is pretty much stock.....and well used.
The '29 body has the cowl gas cap and the '32 grill still has its original trim and cap. The interior is tired, the door handles sag, but you know all the work is in the motor!
The racers are in blue denims with rolled up cuffs, t-shirts and boots.
"Running at the Lakes" is 26" long, carefully made by hand in lost-wax silicone bronze on a marble base. There will only be 15 made. $8,000.00
