AUBURN FALL HILLCLIMB

Got a quick note from somebody who said the Mild Mod was real quick on the hill this time, only beat by one real fast banger. That little car has won trophies and admiration everywhere it has gone. And, like a true hot rod, it races, hillclimbs, drags (streets, too? Nawwwww!) and does brodie contests, cruises cross town and does general actin' up.

HERE'S THE LITTLE ROCKET WITH THE V-8 CAD IN IT!!!

It looks right, too, reflecting the eye and creativity of the builder. Isn't that what a hot rod is supposed to do?

I wonder if he's got a matching rusty beach chair to use at the next Goodguise!?.

DRAG RACING BOOK

COOL COFFEE TABLE BOOK ON DRAG HISTORY

"American Drag Racing" Written and photographed by Robert Genat. Another good picture book. Photography is great and if you, like us, are not too well informed about the history and evolution of drag racing, this is another book you ought to have.

"Award winning journalist Robert Genat has done it again! This time he documented the early years of drag racing in his latest MBI Publishing Company release, American Drag Racing. With a combination of rare archival photos, Genat's razor sharp modern portraits, and compelling text filled with quotes from many of drag racing legends, Genat takes the reader on a tire-smoking literary quarter mile ride like none before."

READER WRITES

Steve Weber read our comments last month about how touchy it must've been towin' racers to/from Bonnie with sorry flathead-powered tow rigs and sent this along:

"In 1960 Sanchez and Kagle were towing the 53 Studebaker Elephant-powered car on a trailer behind a new Cadillac to the salt, running at night. In them days THERE WAS NO SPEED LIMIT in Nevada and low and behold there was flickering lights WAY back and coming fast! Now, the Cats were on cruise - set at 100 MPH and thought this must be some hot dog in a WOP sports car trying to get by.

In a few, they were side by side with none other than Tom Beattie in his flathead powered '40 Ford Panel, towing the belly tanker on a trailer...soon to be out of sight. Now that seemed logical to these cats as they knew old Tom was a little crazy!

Later, after tech check, Tom run against his own record and as only Tom could do, FRIED the engine in the process. Not to be deterred, Tom yanked the engine out of the '40 Ford panel truck and proceeded to qualify for record run the next morning. Tom then proceeded to set a new record and then yanked the engine out of the tank so he could pull the tank home again with the '40!

"Sanchez and Kagle told me that story, and I saw Tom do the engine swap with my own 2!"

LimeWorks
For many rodders today, simpler is better. LimeWorks new steering columns are the answer for the builder who desires a rugged column, free of dated tilt mechanisms and billet gadgets.

With a small tapered steel or stainless cone at the top, bearings at each end (no plastic bushings) and they're compatible with all popular 3 bolt steering wheels. No adapters needed! The standard 3/4 inch, 36 spline end of the shaft accepts any after market U joint, and can be supported at the dash end with any column drop for a 1 3/4 inch tube.

The Lime Works columns are fully-assembled and available in either mild steer ($145) or polished stainless steel ($175) in standard lengths of 28", 30", or 32". Custom lengths are only $20 more. All columns are manufactured of '062 inch wall tubing for a lifetime of use.

Whether you're "going retro" or just building a really clean car and don't want a bulky tilt mechanism. the LimeWorks column is better-built and won't eat half your interior budget.

POSSON SCULPTURE "RUNNING AT THE LAKES"
NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH HOP UP

Just after WWII, hot rodding got a start when young men took their cars out to the dry lake beds to see what they would do.

They began a whole new industry right there on the dry mud.

"Running at the Lakes", a new bronze sculpture by Steve Posson, captures the spirit of the early lakes meets.

The car has Kelsey-Hayes wheels, a dropped axle and a race car steering wheel, but everything else is pretty much stock.....and well used.

The '29 body has the cowl gas cap and the '32 grill still has its original trim and cap. The interior is tired, the door handles sag, but you know all the work is in the motor!

The racers are in blue denims with rolled up cuffs, t-shirts and boots.

"Running at the Lakes" is 26" long, carefully made by hand in lost-wax silicone bronze on a marble base. There will only be 15 made. $8,000.00
