MAGAZINEFirst of all, the basic premise hasn't changed: The wrong people make the money sometimes. But that does not mean if you make money at all that you are a scurrilous backbiter. No, as long as those paying receive value, then you are entitled to your profit. Think about it. When the pros put on a Rod Stop, you pay to get in, but so do the spectators. The fact that they have to pay to get in screens out about 96% of the riff-raff who might be guilty of standing on your running board, or pulling on your shrunken head. They spend money to see all the 'classic' cars, live entertainment and other sights. They have an investment in their day.
The Pro Promoter (OK! OK! the NSRA and Goodguys) provide entertainment value for the fans; they've got food concessions, music, mimes, church services, arts and crafts, a dozen different car competitions (Model A Manor, etc.) and a closed grounds that the Promoter PAID for: his scratch is at risk, ergo he has a potential profit and the risk of a loss. It's free enterprise. Capitalism. The American Way. We vote with our dollars. If he had a good idea (venue, date, reputation, features) we vote by for him by paying to get in. If it's ill-conceived (you know what the reasons might be) you stay home and change your plugs, or motor over some piece of local highway whose speed limit sign has blown over.
