SEE AND BE SCENE (DRIP PAN)

This-here is where we run pics of iron that we get in the mail or by e mail. You know, kind of a ‘Reader’s Rides’ thing or “See and be scene”. In fact, we’ll kinda call this “See and Be Scene” !! So if you got a project or some iron you had for a long time or whatever, e mail us a look at it and hell, you too could be Fairly-Famous with 18 other really bitchin guys.

JOHN WATKINS FROM HOUSTON -  FAMOUS HISTORY IS ONLY THE BEGINNING

John is a Hop Up Guy who got the car from another Hop Up Guy; it’s got a rich, clear, tractable history, has been on the River City Reliability Run, and if we have any sense of futures..this thing ain’t done. Watch for more of it right here.

FROM DOUG VARNER:

“Hi guys,

Just wanted to say I love reading your monthly online publication and if I have enough lunch money left over I buy the annual.

I am a young guy of 30 years old and a member of the Lifters Car club of San Diego. I recently relocated to frozen snowy land of Colorado, but I did get a nice shop out of the deal.

Now to the interesting part the cars I built and the one in process.

The 1930 AV8 Sport Coupe is a former hotrod from the ‘50s that ran a hopped up banger, V8 Wires, White walls, ’36 Ford spare tire cover, red and white tuck and roll interior, Chromed dash and garnish. The car was in Santa Barbra since it was parked in ’58. The neighbor kid shot all the glass out of it and then an Ivy bush over took and rusted out the passenger floorboard. When the car was discovered all you could see was the chrome Model A headlights poking out of a giant Ivy bush. So I call her Ivy. Mikey Van Zetter and I built this car in about 3 months with mostly pre-’48 parts.  1940 59A Flathead with Fenton headers and a ’39 box, 1940 ford brakes all the way around, Tardel ’32 cross member with real ’32 pedals and un-split ’32 bones that fit the cross member like Henry designed it. No body or firewall modifications. The whole swap looks factory Ford and I am often asked if it is original prototype V8 Model A????  I would love to see one!

So once we finished it I christened in sacred dust at El Mirage for the November 2006 meet.

Also, I have included my new project which was another former Hot Rod ’32 3window body found in the North West in the Seattle area. Rumor has in raced a lot at Seattle raceway. The car is unique because of the reverse chop and the raked channel. It is a Lead Chop with model A fenders leaded in the rear. Any help identifying the car would be great. The plans are 331 Hemi with 6x2, Saginaw 4spd, early 9 inch, built period correct late ‘50s rod.

Hope you enjoy the pictures and let me know if they are worth of being online in a few months.

Thanks,

Doug “Tex” Varner”

To answer Doug’s question, “...worthy for the web page..?”

Hell yes! We thrive on this stuff and in case anybody is mis-directed here..this AIN’T no RATROD. This is a sound survivor car being saved, and perpetuated by someone who gets it. All the mechanical is base, correct, safe stuff…the thing just isn’t painted yet..and since it is such a survivor..never needs to be..unless, of course, the Caretaker chooses paint. Then..that’s the way it’ll be…

Ain’t that just like a Hop Up Guy? Clear-headed hot rod art…...

PARADIS IN A TEXAS PARADISE

Last year on one leg of the Revival Tour we found ourselves by this reservoir near Aunt Jessie’s Farm in Silverton Texas. Now it’s only ‘Aunt Jessie’s Farm’ to a guy who’s a Texan trapped in a Californian’s body (me) cuz, sure enough, we were only a few miles from the farm where I FIRST DROVE. No kiddin’. My first drive, 10 years old, in Uncle Lee D’s Chevy roundtruck, had been out there in his cotton fields. Damn. We drove right by it on the way west into Silverton.

That’s Larry Paradis’ roadster, there,  and Tommy’s gasser and Jive Five were just out of the frame.
