MAGAZINEOne of the big haps in So Cal car culture is the one day car shows that happen every weekend during the season. The City co-sponsors the deal and hundreds of 'car guys' show up to display their cars. Damn near every City here has its' own 'Classic Car Show'; and the same guy promotes all of them. He's cut a pretty good lick by handin'' out billions of fliers at all the same shows so the 'car guys' will know where they will be on duty next week.
The 'car guys' bring anything: shoeboxes, street rods, hot rods, woodies, glass Cobras, '57 Pontiacs - anything, man. As long as it's a 'classic'.( We love that classic handle.) But if it doesn't have to be smogged, bring it. They get there about dawn:30 and line up to be sure they will get in. They'll have coffee and chat about whether or not you'll be goin' to "Signal Hill". (That'd be next weeks classic car show.) About 8:00 A.M. the sawhorses are moved back, everybody fires 'em up and begins to percolate the coolant anxiously looking for his shot to get in.
Eventually he gets to the front of the line - Oh Boy - and it's his turn to....to WHAT? He gets to WHAT? He gets to PAY TO GET INTO a show on a city street. After this privilege, the 'car guy' pulls in, parks his car, gets our his matching beach chair that may read "COOL 53" or something, opens his hood and admonishes his neighbor ,"Boy, that nitrous jug cost me a bundle." He then sits down for his reward.
The reward is praise from the Unwashed. The Philistines. Those who do not 'get it'. Those with strollers, bikes, and a longing for free Sunday entertainment. The operational word here is "Free". They WHAT? They get in FREE!!!
Hold on, Bub!

What's wrong with this picture? You know what's wrong.
Approval from like-minded peers is gratifying. Descending to the lot trot occasionally is OK because you can have fun anywhere. Hop Up guys generally won't live for city car shows, but we urge you to ask when you do participate : "Who's zoomin' who?"
