HOP UP 2000 LOOKS LIKE THIS

WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE

Twenty-five years ago, while working at a hot rod shop, we met two Kiwis who had made the passage over here to spend a few weeks soaking up hot rod phenomena and gather some parts. They had no transportation, so my 49 Tudor was elected to be the shop loaner', so these cats could get around. Never occurred to me that they'd be driving on the wrong' side of the road (Do you?) but hey! I was partyin'. For about three weeks it was missing and we forgot about it until it showed up one day, not hurt a bit, but probably having recycled about 30 quarts of Pennsoil. (My Dad later rebuilt the flattie for me so the oil would stay in it.) The guys were grateful for the loan of the car, went back to New Zealand and we went on with the foolishness that was our lives back then.

The 49 had been in storage from 1959 until 1974, when a guy we knew bought it from the original owner. I got it for $600 which was probably what it was worth. I had nooooo money, and I remember Woods flickin' c-notes at me until I said "Whoa" . That head of cabbage was about as big as an Appleton and he'd STILL been shootin' hundreds at me if I hadn't stopped him. (I worked it off, by the way.)

Now, that car is a Donut Derelicts car. It sure as hell is. I saw it there last summer, and when I told Dougie, "That's my ol' 49, see? 638 LHW. That's the new blue plate we put on it in 74". It seemed like he thought I was full of it because who'd remember a license number for 25 years?

I do.

Barry sent me this 25 year old snap shot of the two of them with my car and, can you read it?

638 LHW

He was reading "Hop Up 2000", recognized my name (who'd remember a guy's name for 25 years? Barry do.) and reckoned it was the same Squirrel. It is, Barry. I'm not proud of it, but I'm the same guy.

Betcha we're all sportin' better haircuts these days!

ROOTS

Hop Up 2000 contributor Steve Hendrickson tells us he came by his rod/custom/old car passion honestly: by genetics. In the pic below we see Steve and Roger (Dad/Owner/Driver/Builder of the roadster) goin' for a spin like you know you do every time it gets mocked up and even begins to look like a hot rod.

We're impressed with the 6 Jug carburetion and the innovative "brake shoes". Hendrickson moaned on the latter.

OAKLAND

Look for some intrigue on the "Oakland" subject in '01. There may be two of them, or there may be litigation or negotiation between now and then. It's never simple, is it?

This year, we did not go, heard reviews from "pretty good" to "Ugh". Our contention is that you'll probably never match the 50th for the nostalgia and ROADSTERS on the main floor. But it IS Oakland. Or is it?

SMITH BROTHERS

Ken and Nick Smith (The Hot Rod Works in Idaho) have acquired Atkinson Machine. Wayne Atkinson has been noted for innovative solutions to early Ford driveline problems, and the Smiths will continue to work with him on product development. This product/machine service will augment their already successful rod shop in Nampa.

They're Hop Up Guys, ya know?
