MORT'S SHORTS

Anticipation.

You can be anticipating the arrival of a new car, or you can be looking forward to the completion of an improvement on your existing car done by yourself....or work done by someone you entrusted to do it your way.

You could be jonesin' for the tour you will leave on next week....or even next August.

You have to have something to chew on. It's that ol' daytime dreamin' that y'all are so good at.........and it keeps us vital.

I guess non-car people have it some other way. Ball an' stick guys can't wait to see what the Pats do this Sunday (?), but that's entirely spectator. Golfers participate and.....if they watch it on TV..at least they go out and do their best on the same end of the club that the pro's do. Kinda like watching racing and then taking your piece to the nostalgia drags.

In Cali there isn't much winter so we get to use 'em lots, but there are still a few inclement days where you're stuck inside, and you have to visualize goin' down the road in the car on that ideal piece of highway ...and don't be mistaken...........we have some of those here, and your mind will get real precise and you can hear the car, see the vista out that flat front glass, maybe follow 'the dog' through some turns and marvel at how you can do this......how you can provide yourself such pleasure in such a simple way...with no one watchin'. That may be the primal element. Without audience.

The car transports you - literally - but also figuratively.

Literally: from here, over that winding, scenic road to whatever horizon caught your fancy. And figuratively? Where do I start?

It sounds silly to suggest that we 'pretend' that we are back in the day, but then......... if you are all about how cool it would have been to be that guy...with the heads and carbs and pipes and the ride and the look and....all.....it can be cathartic . We reenact those times, find them exciting, cool and noble, evolution-wise, (see IFS) and don't need ratification from the rest who may have a different slant.

Iconoclast. Individualist. Independent. That'd mean....Doin' your own thang.

You spend your time appreciating that pre-'me' moment; you get to participate in the activity that hooked you when you were too young/poor/uninformed.....and you likely do more of it today than your idols did......back then. It's cool............

Or you could be doing it (reenacting) in a slightly different era: maybe a SBC in a slammed coupe, T n' R, sounds...cheap sunglasses............just like you did 35 years ago. Hmmmmmmm.

Then, if you been doing it all along...and this is not a reenactment.....if this is just you....then............oh, my goodness.........you must be happy handling those needs... just the way you are? You don't have to have the latest doo-dad...you don't have to add another dash placque....you don't have to be involved with the car that got all the press....you don't have to work at your fame/reputation/notoriety.........

Awwwww....you're a Hop Up Guy,now, ain't cha?!

We knew that.
