So....we were tryin' to collect ourselves after the hub-bub of LA Roadsters Fathers Day show and here was the above photograph in our stuff. "Gosh" we says to ourselves: "We're supposed to remember who handed this to us but...damn..........." and we asked the question on the next web page, and then we got the nice note that follows:
Hi Mark
Will try to give you the straight scoop on me and the roadster in question. My connection with you was that I am a long time buddy of Bill Carey in San Bernardino at Carey's Fine Autos and Jim Lattin who owns and runs the chopped 34 with the Ardun at B'Ville (Broad Jumper)and I are partners in a couple of ventures. I was with Lattin at Carey's for the photo shoot and this is where I had a chance to talk to you regarding the old times (I'm 70 and born and raised in Gardena) and give you the pic of the roadster. Here's the story: In 1950 when the Korean war started, I joined the Navy and in 51 was assigned to the USS Montrose as was Bob Longman. We became friends and we discussed the roadster he had just built and he had just driven it a short time when Korea called. When we had a break from Korea (30 days and the back) I bought the roadster from Bob and when the Hop Up test #4 came out I believe I had already bought it, but it will always be the Longman roadster which is as it should be. I don't remember if it mentioned it in the article but it had a full belly pan and the the body work and paint were all by Barris and he called the paint Burple it was so dark it looked black. If my memory is correct I believe Bob sold it to me for $900.00. In about 54 I traded it for a chopped 50 Ford custom and have no idea what happened to it.
Off the subject, but interesting (I think) is at the same time Bob and I were on the Montrose were a couple of guys named Fred Larsen and Don Cummins who built competition engines after they got out of service ( down around Moon's place) and then Fred ran Moon's machine shop for years and recently passed away. I am probably the only guy to ever sleep with Dean Moon! But that's another whole story. Thanks for the Tacos and coke at lunch that day.

These were some black and white pics that Mild Mitch took during the last 100 M.P.H. Club Banquet at Bonneville. It'd be easy to transport yourself to a day in the pits in the 50's, huh?

Rudy will always have photo-art to add to his collection of photos, taken over...well.....over a long time. He oughta be a historian.
Ya really oughta go. You can go in one afternoon or evening and still make Turlock before or after. Go support something that is needed in Southern California.
Even if it's raining, come out and support the only indoor show in the Southland. We'll reserve judgment on the location, talent pool and the rest until after the show.
Never mind that it's not really Oakland. We regret that, too. But the stars did not align for that to continue.
