Hop Up MAGAZINE

August 2001

T 'n A

Rich Turner is a Hop Up Guy who's got the goods on T's. Grew up around them it seems, and is going to share some Teasers with us in Hop Up 2002; his calling card is the touring car below, about which we'll learn more in a future issue.

HOT RODDER'S BIBLE

Join us, Brethren, and gather at the Temple in the Towers (in the booth in the corner in the room in the back?). Join hands and send praise upward because the Goodbook (Gary shoulda thought of this) has arrived.

Hop Up Guys Steve Hendrickson and his co-author Gerry Burger have put together the 288 page softbound book - "The Hotrodder's Bible". It's one that will live in the 'tech' area of the shop rather than in the library, once I've gone through it; it is text-bookish only in that it covers the basics of most build subjects and includes YOUR specific interests as well as the other guy's specific interests. e.g. axles and 'pins, and independent, too. But it profits in readability from the long experience of the authors in writing about AND building hot rods. Most crafty guys who know they can do a major project but have never done one, and who would like a primmer on the subject, can start here.

"A Brief History of the Hot Rod" might be a little sophomoric as a starting point - you'll probably skip that - but you WILL find something you need in the book. Like most books of this genre, it's not directed to the professional - professionals write 'em. This one is more for mid to upper range fabricators than tinkerers and I (lower range) find it materially useful.

The best part of the book is the opinion offered on how things should look. Since we agree with them, that's a good thing. Most books won't risk judgment calls.

You ought to buy it to help them pay for the free one they sent us.

PROUD ENDORSEMENTS

We hates t' brag, but Hop Up has got friends in high places. Yeah, yeah, we try to be the home of cool for 'Everyman', but we been around a long time, know some of the big name guys and.....well, like the L.A. Roadsters. We know a bunch of them for ever. They're famous. And one of the most famous of them is Jack Stewart. He reads Hop Up, considers it a source of inspiration and we are honored to have his endorsement. The following photo probably will be in the upcoming "L.A. Roadster Retrospective" book. Ya think?

POSSON SCULPTURE "RUNNING AT THE LAKES"
NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH HOP UP

Just after WWII, hot rodding got a start when young men took their cars out to the dry lake beds to see what they would do.

They began a whole new industry right there on the dry mud.

"Running at the Lakes", a new bronze sculpture by Steve Posson, captures the spirit of the early lakes meets.

The car has Kelsey-Hayes wheels, a dropped axle and a race car steering wheel, but everything else is pretty much stock.....and well used.

The '29 body has the cowl gas cap and the '32 grill still has its original trim and cap. The interior is tired, the door handles sag, but you know all the work is in the motor!

The racers are in blue denims with rolled up cuffs, t-shirts and boots.

"Running at the Lakes" is 26" long, carefully made by hand in lost-wax silicone bronze on a marble base. There will only be 15 made. $8,000.00
