APRIL COVER

All three cover shots this month came from our Pal, KRA (Kentucky Road Agent) Jesse Connor. The pictures include the brand new (250 mile) roadster that he and Carol would head west in this summer, and if WE were together enough we would tie up with them somewhere along the way and finish the ride to Bonneville together.

The second photo is a progress shot of Garry Eldridge's '32 Vic that Jess and Garry are giving a 'restoration' to. Garry has had/run the car for something like thirty years and the KRA is fixin' it for the next thirty.

The bottom shot is of the Buford 8 Inliner-powered modified that is next in line for the works. They got it figured out. Don't have to go to the daily grind any more, just fiddle with all this scrap.

The photos came along with a typically funny letter Jess sent, pretending to be a hillbilly who 'cain't' read, etc. and it was great to open the envelope, hear from a Pal, and see what these cats were up to. The morning after we got the letter, we got a call saying that Jess had died. We won't attempt to be eloquent here; just wish I could've told him how good the roadster looks.................

PHOTO SEARCH

The Hop Up Art Department (Coco and her entire staff) have asked that we solicit your old rod and racing photos for the Archive section of the next Hop Up Annual. We pay big bucks. Naaaaaw, we don't.

But let us know what's out there..maybe it's your Dad's drag racing photos, or his lakes stuff, or car club at the drive-in, or his ride parked on the lawn in front of Granma's house. Maybe it's your own pitiful attempt at building a hot rod WAY back in the sixties. You could be published, Man.

Jus' think of it................

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Most of what we rattle about here is our own doin's, where we went, what we're working on, who we been trackin'. So when the weather keeps us indoors we might not be accumulating experiences about which to opine.

So we finds ourselves hangin' with the books. We revisited Al Drake's "Flat Out" and it is interesting to note how intriguing it is on this reading; we have studied more, learned more in the meantime, and can cross-reference a bunch of the information that is in the book. If you don't have this book, you should get it.

In the racing field a new book that turned up is, " Auto Racing Memories" by Urb Stair. Now Urb is a guy who most older So Cal car people know as a Hillkiller at Shell Hill and a connected-from-the-thirties race car guy. THAT gets our attention. The book is like a personally-noted scrapbook with some essay entries about his most serious racing efforts, in '37-'39. (We noted that he flat-towed his racer with a '36 3W that appeared lowered...all the way around). And they got the goods, along with Stairs' recollections of who and what. There must be other archives of the racing experiences of individuals and we wish that all would be chronicled like this one. We recently read the "Pop Dreyer Story" and, looking forward to the next one, are desperate that someday sources of these 'tomes' will dry up. Stair, for example, is about 89.

You can get "Auto Racing Memories" by sending $39.95 s&h included (Ca. add $3.50) to:

Kendall Buck & Co.
8821 La Entrada
Whittier, Ca. 90605

It'd be nice if you told them you got the lead from the bitchin guys at HOP UP MAG.

HI TECH HOP UP

Jackie Howerton is an Indy Car /Sprint Car driver and builder whose alter-ego is a HOP UP GUY. His Indy Speedster was the mind-blower in-the-white at Oakland 50th and we are anxiously awaiting the finished product. It's promise is that it may be THE quintessential evolution of the track T roadster because, Boys, they don't ALL look good. Some miss it here, some miss it there. They don't all look good just because of their lineage. Our money is on this one.

Of particular note, though, is the radiator. It is the prototype of the Indy Speedster Radiators that Jackie is making for the high tech crowd and it, like all his stuff, is incredible. Here's a look, in case you break your chain after that lotto payoff.

ANTIQUE NATIONALS

June 3, 2001, Palmdale, L.A. County Raceway. Without a doubt, the best traditional hot rod event all year; here is where you get to USE them. Drag 'em out. Hell, fellers, the whole gag was always about performance first. So go out and PERFORM!!! Or watch a bunch of other BFGs perform. There's a picnic the day before, and all the info can be had by calling (909) 695-3713.
